Why keep records?
If you use pesticides, keeping a good record of each application is important for a number of reasons. Some of these include:
- A good record will help protect you from any legal issues, or questions from clients. If there is ever a question about a specific application, having a record will save you a lot of time in answering that question.
- The pesticide record can transfer information between employees if multiple people are working in the same area. It can also help you remember what occurred in the same field or yard during the previous year.
- Referring to the record will help inform your inventory. You’ll be able to budget for and purchase the correct amount of product, without having to dispose of excess chemicals.
- A good record will help inform you about what pesticide to choose, and the best way to use it. If you keep detailed records, you’ll be able to see what rate was effective in managing the problem, and other details such as timing and weather conditions.
What information should I include in my records?
A good record includes a variety of information. Some details you’ll want to include are:
- Safety information for applicators. This includes emergency contact information for local emergency centers, and phone numbers for poison control and other authorities.
- Basic information about each pesticide. You may choose to list each pesticide and pertinent information on a reference sheet. You can give each product an identifying number and refer to it in your application record.
- The SDS information for each pesticide you keep on hand. This is important to have in case of an emergency – if you seek medical attention related to the pesticide, the doctor will be able to consult this information.
- A record of each application. This gives details about the product used, when it was applied, how much was applied, the size of the area treated, and what you treated for. It may also provide additional information, such as weather conditions, the equipment used to apply the pesticide, or information about the life stage of the pest being controlled.
