Nestled in the heart of Tobaccoville, NC., Anders Family Farm stands as a testament to innovation in sustainable agriculture. Specializing in hydroponic greens, lettuce, herbs, and microgreens, this family-run farm has carved out a niche in the local market with its commitment to quality, freshness, and environmental stewardship.

Founded by Anna Ander’s late husband, Mark Anders, Anders Family Farm has embraced hydroponics to overcome seasonal limitations and enhance crop consistency. “We can grow items throughout the year by climate controlling my environment here,” Anna says.

Hydroponic farming offers several advantages over traditional soil-based methods, notably sustainability and efficiency. “I can grow a lot more in a condensed space with a lot more variety,” Anna notes. This approach allows for faster turnover of crops and prolonged production seasons, meeting the demands of both local consumers and restaurant partners.

The farm’s commitment to community extends beyond its produce. Hosting a weekly farm stand and participating

in local farmers’ markets like the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market, Anders Family Farm ensures direct access for consumers seeking fresh, locally-grown produce. They also collaborate with food hubs and distribute through various channels, including a partnership with Carolina’s Farm Trust in Charlotte.

The farm also engages with local schools, educating children on agricultural practices and fostering a deeper connection to food sources. They are in the process of becoming a therapeutic farm and will begin a veteran apprenticeship program in 2025.This community-oriented approach underscores their dedication to transparency and education in farming practices.

Like many businesses, Anders Family Farm adapted swiftly during the COVID-19 pandemic, expanding their online presence and implementing drive-through pickups at markets. “We shifted more online to increase availability,” Anna reflects, highlighting their agility and responsiveness to community needs.

Operating in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Anna acknowledges the challenges but also sees a shifting landscape. “There’s a shift happening where women are being looked at differently,” she notes, emphasizing the increasing presence of women farmers at local markets.

Looking ahead, Anders Family Farm envisions a continuation of its legacy with the potential for a third generation to take the reins. The farm’s sustainability practices and community engagement ensure a bright future, rooted in a passion for quality and a commitment to nurturing both land and relationships.

With an eye toward the future, Anders Family Farm aims to share their knowledge globally. Plans are underway to teach hydroponic farming to missionaries in other countries, envisioning a broader impact beyond local borders.

Anders Family Farm exemplifies the intersection of innovation, sustainability, and community involvement. As they continue to grow and adapt, their dedication to quality and local food systems remains unwavering. Whether through their vibrant farm stand, partnerships with local restaurants, or educational outreach, Anders Family Farm continues to sow seeds of change in agriculture.
