About the Program:

Forsyth County Urban Farm School is an intensive 12 week class for individuals motivated to start a business growing and selling produce.

This course is an opportunity for adult students to learn about creating and running a small market garden or urban farm. This 12-week hands-on course takes students through soil preparation, seeding, transplanting, food safety, harvest and finally to sale of their produce. The class will meet twice a week for 12 weeks between March and June working both the classroom and in a student-managed field plot. By planting, growing, harvesting and selling a season's crop, students can expect to gain experience with practical methods of farming with an eye for economic empowerment to benefit their families and their community.

Topics covered include: site selection, soil health, crop selection/establishment, production mapping, irrigation, fertility management, integrated pest and disease management, business planning, pre-/post harvest produce safety, and direct to consumer marketing. Students are responsible for attending classroom and field sessions during which they will establish and maintain field plots with spring crops.
