For Fall Victory Garden registration, visit our Eventbrite pages for distribution on September 15th, and September 22nd.

Victory Gardens began in the United States during wartime in order to feed families while other materials went to the war effort. While we may not be fighting a major war today, COVID-19 creates its own challenges in the wake of food and economic insecurity. Together with the Master Gardener℠ volunteers of Durham County, Family and Consumer Sciences Program, and 4-H, we are offering materials to start your own 4-H Victory Garden to help produce fun and food over the summer and beyond. Our kits are priced at $20, but are free to families in need of financial assistance – no questions asked. Our kits can be used to start a garden in the ground, or in containers if you don’t have a yard to plant in.

With your kit you’ll be given:

  • Tomato, Pepper, and Basil starter plants.
  • Bagged Compost
  • Fertilizer
  • Gardening Tools
  • Three Three-Gallon Pots (if container gardening)
  • Potting Soil (if container gardening)

In addition, we’ll be posting regular instructional videos on how to care and cook your new food source. We hope to continue through the summer with additional plants and seeds, and even continue gardens into the fall months.

Share your garden progress through our Durham 4-H Facebook or Instagram pages.

Ask questions about your plants and receive answers from our talented group of Master Gardeners through the Remind app.

If you have additional questions, please contact your Durham 4-H Agent, Mac Hulbert, at gmhulber@ncsu.edu.
