Are you interested in joining a network of passionate gardeners across the state who are dedicated to learning and sharing research-based information, enhancing their communities through horticulture, and connecting people with the benefits of gardening?

Watauga Extension will be offering the Extension Master Gardener Training Course beginning March 10th. Classes will be Thursday mornings from 8:30-12:00 for 13 weeks, approximately 45 hours of class time. You may miss up to 3 classes.

You do not need to be an expert gardener to participate in the course, we will provide the training. We are looking for participants that will excellent volunteers. In order to become a Certified Extension Master Gardener you complete the course, pass an exam, and then participate in 40 hours of horticulture related community volunteer service. When asked what the course is like, I describe it as being similar to a Horticulture 101 class in college. We cover all the main topics involved in horticulture from botany, soils, and propagation, to fruits, vegetables, insect management, disease management, native plants, woody plants, landscape planning and more. It is a combination of self learning, lectures, fun hands on activities and short field trips. 2022 Master Gardener Course Schedule

Cost of the course is $120 which includes a one time $50 fee that goes to NC State to support the program at the state level (after this there is never a yearly membership or other fees) $55 for access to the online interactive manual that you have access to indefinitely (there is a printed option) and $15 stays in the local program for various supplies. Scholarships can be made available for those in need.
