The 43rd annual Carolina Feed Industry Association (CFIA) Feed Technology School took place at NC State University on Friday, November 22. The seminar gives the feed industry in North Carolina opportunities to learn more about topics of interest in their facilities and program updates at the university.

The morning started with a feed milling program update from Dr. Adam Fahrenholz. He talked about the growth of the academic programs and the state of the Feed Mill Education Unit.

Following Dr. Fahrenholz’ talk, Ms. Marissa Herchler talked about the FSMA inspections to date. She highlighted common struggles of the industry in the development of food safety plans and compliance in general.

Ms. Milo Lewis of the NC Farm Bureau talked about the status of the pork lawsuits in N.C., as well as preparations being made across the nation due to potential economic impacts of African Swine Fever.

One of the most anticipated events of the day was a virtual feed mill tour. Herchler and Fahrenholz worked with DELTA to create a virtual tour of the NC State Feed Mill Education Unit. For this meeting, Fahrenholz and Herchler, with Mr. Chandler Adams, presented a new North Carolina feed mill in Scotland County via Matterport. Attendees had the opportunity to take a full facility tour from their seats.

After the tour, the group discussed the potential uses of virtual tours for communication with consumers and emergency responders.
